Running Two OS Side by Side

Hey!

I am looking to run two OS side by side. One is going to be Windows 7. But I don't know what the other OS should be. I was looking at Ubuntu. Any suggestions?

Are there any other Open Source OS that are good? Also if not, do you happen to know how I would go by installing both side by side?
