How to get the smoothest gameplay?

Okay, don't go ahead and call me a nub.

Anyway, got dead island riptide coming any time soon but I think I'm going to have a little trouble playing it smoothly. My mate has around the same specs as me and says he laggs real bad.

I looked into the recommended pc specs required for the game and my pc met it. I was just wondering if you have any tips for making a game run smoother.. For example: Have less running applications, playing offline etc?

Turn off as many programs as you can, use task manager to kill unnecessary programs. use Razor game booster to help, turn down resolution, video quality etc. in game, set the process of the game to High priority in task manager. Don't use windows Aero theme.
