Hello

So I've been using shared hosting for most of my websites but now I think I'm ready to move forward onto a VPS and I have some questions,

1. What VPS do I get that has the windows 1990 or whatever teamviewer-like interface? Where I can control it like I'm controlling someone elses computer via Teamviewer. Whats the exact name of this? I'm assuming it's Windows? Once I bought a Linux VPS, it just gave me a black cmd panel on a website which I don't want.

2. How do I set up a MySQL database like on shared hosting - MySQL databases/Phpmyadmin? I need this to host PHP scripts which need MySQL and forums etc.

3. How/where do I upload my files like I do in FileZilla?

4. What else do I need to do to get the website working with the domain, etc.

5. What VPS would you recommend that's got a fairly cheap price?

6. Is there anything else that I should need to know before getting a VPS and hosting a website on it?

Thanks.

1) All , Well most VPS are Windows 2008 server edition and you can access them via Remote desktop connection? if that's what you meant. (It's inbuilt in your windows/Mac computer)

2) You can download Navicat or PHPMyAdmin or even do a database on MS Access

3) You setup a webserver i.e IIS or Xampp or Wampp or whatever the fuck u want, I'd recommend IIS.

4) A domain & A VPS. thats all, Proxy if you want it to be safe but trust me its not needed unless you want to spend those extra 5$

5) They got good and fast VPS.

6) Just knowledge on how to set it up.

Hope that helped.

Okay i am gonna try to answer this i need to be more useful to the community ;)

Your thinking of Windows Server VPS and there usually more expensive then linux vps hookups. But Another note is you can get a linux/debian vps and install a desktop environment and vnc server - Kinda like tv/rdp.

Personally i would go the cheaper path and get Ubuntu Server and install a Web Based GUI, and then install lighttpd. :p its a great setup for beginner.
2. How do I set up a MySQL database like on shared hosting - MySQL databases/Phpmyadmin? I need this to host PHP scripts which need MySQL and forums etc.
Shared hosting usually includes mysql hosting, so i don't understand the question.

Personally i would use mysql-server on the VPS, more control.
3. How/where do I upload my files like I do in FileZilla?
two options here actually,
1.) On your VPS, you can use any FTP,FTPS Server.
2.) Shared Hosting Servers, Or Cloud Storage.
4. What else do I need to do to get the website working with the domain, etc.
Once you buy the domain you will have to create a HostRecord with A (Address) with your vps ip.
5. What VPS would you recommend that's got a fairly cheap price?
This i cannot help with sorry i used chicagoVPS and wasn't very happy with them. try googling "Best VPS Providers"

TIP: I usually pay 20/30$ monthly for linux VPS. so a Windows VPS will be more expensive.
6. Is there anything else that I should need to know before getting a VPS and hosting a website on it?
Learn Linux, Mysql and common terms like vps, ftp, lighttpd, and more about windowsVPS and LinuxVPS setups.

Because,

1. Shared hosts are unstable and always go down, slow, lots of errors on your website, etc and are not reliable.
2. Shared hosts have shit ToS and won't allow you to host lots of things.
3. Shared hosts always gives me errors when I host PHP scripts (nothing to do with coding problems). Also gives me CloudFlare errors and website keeps going offline.
4. Faster speeds, bandwidth, and storage.
1. Shared hosts are generally more stable than VPS/Dedicated (for example, HostGator's shared cluster servers have 32 cores, 32-64GB of RAM and SSD specifically for MySQL). Slow is 99% caused by inefficient code. Errors on your website are caused by coding 99% of the time.
2. The ToS depends on the provider. If you're only running a website, then there's no need for a VPS.
3. Depends on the error really. You're wanting to host PHP scripts, but you want to do it on a webserver that has Windows as the OS. Windows already has a huge footprint compared to the main Linux distros, so you'll encounter far more problems especially in regards to memory usage.
4. Faster speeds is a lie. All servers in one datacenter are either going to be on a 100mbps connection or a 1gbps connection. Bandwidth and storage will be less on VPS (mosts hosts offer unlimited/unmetered bandwidth and storage on shared servers).

The reason to have a VPS is so you have root access. If you don't need root access, you don't need a VPS. Choosing to use Windows server over Linux because you don't know how to use SSH is just plain dumb.

But then when I go onto hosting forums, most shared hosting will fail and lots of errors occur because forum uses lots of resources.

What shared hosting would you recommend for hosting forums without errors?
Forums don't use a lot of resources. Installing shitty plugins/extensions does. Same thing with WordPress. So many WordPress plugins are resource hogs.
