PHP error

I am new to PHP and trying to make a user system, I have go the part done where it checks the database to see if user exists but its a bit messed up and I get this error:

It should be..

return ((mysql_result($query, 0) == 1) ? true : false);

I believe.

It should be..

return ((mysql_result($query) == 1) ? true : false);

I believe.

Why not?

return mysql_result($query) == 1;

Would not have any difference performance-wise, but IMHO the way I showed looks better.

$query = mysql_query("SELECT COUNT (`user_id`) FROM `users` WHERE `username` = $username");

Oh I confused the line..
On line 5 do:

$query = mysql_query("SELECT COUNT(user_id) FROM users WHERE username = '{$username}' LIMIT 1") or die(mysql_error());

You should take it from there

It didn't break it more, it threw a MySQL error.. Google the error and you should find a solution.
