You could start with something simple like an URL shortener :)

EDIT: Why - It is easy and you can make a simplistic but beautiful design since you really only need a text box and everything else is up to your imagination.

this depends... what languages are you familiar with, what do you like, who do you wish to be, what topics do you wish to speak of many aspects into the website creating process

I was really thinking of something people would use or need but does not exist on a big scale, a URL Shortener, Image hosters and things like that are quite common so I was not really hoping to make on of those.

You could try designing a clean Minecraft topsite, there's a lot but I haven't seen one that is actually good looking.

Not as easy as it sounds.

I currently only know HTML and a bit of CSS to style the web page, I would prefer to purchase something of code canyon and learn from there but I would not really get anywhere using someone else's work so where should I start and what should I make, one more thing: I am hoping to learn PHP

If you are aspiring in coding and website development, then i believe this project right now should be your practice. Find a cool idea and do it for practical reasons such as, increasing your CSS skill, learning more tags in both css and html and just general practice. But as far as a big project, after you feel comfortable begin to learn php as you said you wish to do. PHPACADEMY on youtube is great they provide wonderful tutorials.

But to be ontopic: once again for practice make a personal website, if you want to make a website that helps people most likely php will be needed. one day you will be there but of course without a base there is no roof.

goodluck to you

Knowing HTML and a bit of CSS will not build you a unique/not so common website.

You need to learn php to give the site its function unless you just want a plain html/css website where users cannot do a great deal

Php is really the main part of a site - or so I think. If you're wanting to do anything that would be a benifit to you, I suggest learning to program php. :)

If you're going to do something like what Kryptos suggested -- URL shortener -- please use jQuery and Ajax for form submission.

I doubt he knows what Ajax and jQuery is, as he said he only knows CSS and HTML. lmaoo
Just because he claims he only knows HTML and CSS doesn't meant to suggest that's he's never heard of Ajax and/or jQuery regardless of whether he knows how to use them.
