Man Implants Headphones Into Ears

Recently, a man in America has implanted some homemade headphones into his ears.​

Rich Lee is the first person ever to surgically insert a magnet into part of his ear - the tragus. The tragus is the firm bit of skin that is in front of the ear canal.​

To get the implant to work, Mr Lee has to wear a coil device around his neck. The device then creates a magnetic field which causes the implant to vibrate and to create sound. In other words, the implant in the tragus works like a set of headphones and it sends audio directly to the ear when it is used with the coil.​

Mr Lee is almost completely blind in one eye and he has been told by specialists that he could lose his other eye at any time. Instead of Rich accepting his fate, he has plans to hook the homemade implant up to an ultrasonic range-finder. He has said that this will give him "a sense of echolocation like a bat has". He has also said that he might connect it to a Geiger counter, which detects radioactivity.​

Mr Lee has said: "I'd love to experience the world or radiation. Living near the old Nevada nuclear testing grounds provides a lot of opportunity for this. Hearing a gentle hiss around warm objects might be a novel way to experience the thermal realm. The implant is going to allow for a lot of new senses."​

The cool thing about Rich Lee's invention is that it could make it possible to cheat in exams.​

DIY 'biohacking' has been on the rise over the last few years with several groups and individuals experimenting with implanted technology. 'Grinders' use objects such as magnets and radio-frequency chips in order to gain or improve different senses. One American man implanted 4 magnets into his arm just to hold his iPad Nano.​

Its a pretty good idea, especially as it increases his hearing which will help more in everyday life once he becomes blind.
But it could be harmful, especially if he has a reaction to the magnets as overtime the metal may poison him

Don't they say when you lose in one you gain in another? He's losing his eyesight so I think it's great that he's taking the opportunity to try and improve and "gain" in hearing. It could turn out to be horrible and damage something in his brain but otherwise it could be great for him. He'll need all the hearing he can get if he's going blind?

I think you're being an idiot. Do you even understand what IMPLEMENTED INTO HIS EARS means?
It means they're now inside of him.

Anyways, can the people that are facepalming tell us why? I think it's a great idea to improve himself before he goes blind. Sure, it may turn out bad but that's the risk you take when you do something. He's the first to test it and it's working. Maybe some medical staff and scientists can work together to improve it safely now that he's done it.

People are afraid of change. Human beings find security in habit. Change makes them uncomfortable because it requires adjustment which forces people to make both mental and physical re-arrangements.
