I started coding this, it's my first attempt at any form of proper CSS design.
It may not be perfect, needs to be cleaned up.

What do you think?

Need to change that brown . It looked good initially, but it's not that good now.
I was thinking a grey-whitish colour

You're really improving at CSS. But like the other comments, it does look plain. I'd suggest not making it 100% across the screen and substitute the brown with a light grey colour. Regardless of that, I think this is awesome for a first layout.
