Sending money via mail is rather asinine if you ask me, though if you want money directly into your bank account you can just use Ebay and get people to do payments through Visa. There's not much reason not to use PayPal when selling online, unless you don't have a bank account.

tl;dr the seller could just take the money that the site (ebay for example) mailed them, then claim it wasn't inside the package to begin with , paypal prevents this from happening through recorded transactions, this is why buyers and sellers typically use it for the added security
