I'm looking into learning PHP and would like to know how some of you learnt to develop your skills.

At this time I'm just whacking through this videos and picking up nothing :/

I need some general advice, how did you pick up the language if self taught how? Cheers folks.

You can't really be taught on how to pick up the language, It all depends how far can you go with the language, It's all basic programming which you need to learn then just learn syntaxes for every language.

If you can't teach yourself PHP, I'd recommend you rather, Not to go for programming because you'll be a very bad programmer. (Don't take it offensive, I'm being realistic here)

On a side note, If you're really looking forward to this , Try looking into other videos & tutorials, Practice the shit twice a day, Make small scripts/ CMS's and that's how you learn any language, Or should I say master it.
Other than that, If I am extremely honest, I hate PHP and I'd rather suggest you learning Java as to what Java pays off really good in future and for career if you're opting programming for future.

Hope that, summed it up.

Pick something easy, like a small blogging system, and just start to edit it to your likings by googling what you want to do. After some time you'll know how the basics work, and how you can use some PHP functions, and start making something on your own.

Trial and error.

You can never fully 'master' a language. There's new things being implemented all the time and there's already so much to learn.

I find it best to look at other peoples source codes and look at functions; try to figure out what they do and then use php.net to read the documentation on the functions. But I guess it's all about personal preference. We all learn in different ways.
