"Ello is a simple, beautiful, and ad-free social network created by a small group of artists and designers.
We originally built Ello as a private social network. Over time, so many people wanted to join Ello that we built a public version of Ello for everyone to use."

Is it the next big thing? The new Facebook maybe? It is currently invite only, I have already requested mine and hope I get invited soon. It's been all over the internet for the last few days and I am sure excited for it. The creators have some cool ideas and the whole thing is ad free. With ad-block how ever this isn't that major but it's nice that they care. I also dig the design, it's clean and simple and something different to most social networks. Anyway let me know your thoughts on the whole project.

Their no Ad policy
Ad Free
Ello doesn't sell ads. Nor do we sell data about you to third parties.
Virtually every other social network is run by advertisers. Behind the scenes they employ armies of ad salesmen and data miners to record every move you make. Data about you is then auctioned off to advertisers and data brokers. You're the product that's being bought and sold.
Collecting and selling your personal data, reading your posts to your friends, and mapping your social connections for profit is both creepy and unethical. Under the guise of offering a "free" service, users pay a high price in intrusive advertising and lack of privacy.
We also think ads are tacky, that they insult our intelligence and that we're better without them.

I've seen this but haven't checked it out. There's always going to be something new to try and compete. I just don't see how they'll fund it, if and when it goes big.

No ads? No selling data? So are they just gonna fund it all themselves

Good point, but I am sure they'll find a way. It has grown magnificently fast in the last week or so.

Yeah it's grown as all media is hyping it up. But I read an article where they said like I say. Every now and then something comes along and they call it a 'Facebook killer' lol.

Nonetheless I'll request an invite and see what it's like. But Facebook is here for a long time to come :p

Like John said their business plan needs to have something innovative and something will manage to "kill" facebook, without using ads. This whole freemium idea is good, but most of the ideas remain the same. I'm not going to slag off freemium too much as it's my plan.

Anyway, like @Kaz said, the site isn't all that appealing to look at. It takes a [fucking mega] minimal approach and normally I'd be all for that but Ello takes minimal to the next level (and more) it is very basic and on larger screens it's full of blank space.

It'll be interesting to see where Ello ends up a few years down the line as of now, they are still in the opening stages and are currently backed by a lot of wealthy investors but if they fail to meet expections, will investors pull out? Oh, also.. Getting an invite to this site takes ages, I've been waiting a good couple of weeks now, best be worth it.

They're backed by venture capital firms, and if they go anywhere, I assure you that they will become what Facebook is now - they didn't invest in them for no reason.

Regardless, the site is atrocious, and looks like it has some MySpace theme applied to it from 2005.

I just think it's all hype as they've said they're anti-Facebook. So they'll get media attention

But yeah the theme is horrid

Is this the same Ello from last year? If so, the older design was much better.

It is currently in beta, but everyone has their own opinion. I guess you either like or dislike the theme.

As for invites, any member can invite others. I got an invite code from another friend and can now give unlimited invites to others. So PM me if you want one.
