Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.

For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.

Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.

Too long; didn't read:
  • An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games.
  • Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today.

Does this change anything for you?
Personally, I knew they would do something like this - and I know for a fact that they will be hiding something else from us.

There is still the privacy concern with the kinect always on and always listening. Now with the NSA leak, do you really want that?

I think it's too little too late for Microsoft. They've already created their image on this product and it's not a good one.

I don't know where you have gotten this from, care to show?

You are in control of what Kinect can see and hear: By design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup. The system will navigate you through key privacy options, like automatic or manual sign in, privacy settings, and clear notifications about how data is used. When Xbox One is on and you’re simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded.

You are in control of when Kinect sensing is On, Off or Paused: If you don’t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command -- “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you’ll need to turn it back on for these experiences.

You are in control of your personal data: You can play games or enjoy applications that use data, such as videos, photos, facial expressions, heart rate and more, but this data will not leave your Xbox One without your explicit permission. Here are a few examples of potential future scenarios:
A fitness game could measure heart rate data to provide you with improved feedback on your workout, allow you to track your progress, or even measure calories burned.

A card game could allow you to bluff your virtual opponent using your facial expressions.

Yes, they are going to share data with the NSA but so are many other massive corporations such as Facebook.

The moment they announced the console i knew it would cause huge complaints.
Quite frankly the amount of dedicated Xbox fans that said they would switch to the PS4, Microsoft could risk it, and it was pretty obvious they would do something about it.

In regards to the NSA comment, it was unveiled recently that Microsoft have exploits which the government exploit to gain the data, which in theory they are not technically handing out public info.
With the talks about cameras that are connected to internet, can be streamed in one way or another (i cant remember the exact link, i think anon posted it on facebook) basically it is/may be possible with the kinect.
But with the new revelation, turn your internet off if your playing an offline game, no internet = no online kinect

Yeah, I knew they'd do something/have a plan.

At the NSA bit there, I heard different - I heard that Microsoft gave NSA exploits and the Zero Day stuff.

It was too obvious, it wouldnt suprise me if they had that as a plan from the start to build a hype up, because it was a common topic in the gaming world.

Yeh same shit though.
They have exploits, and instead of patching them, NSA can manipulate them to gain the data which means Microsoft are not actually handing them the data directly

Most of the exploits have actually been fixed? Several for Windows have been patched the current Zero Day exploit that always comes around is Java, currently - not heard so much about Windows other than the obvious RDC/RDP ones.

- EDIT - Apparently the information they have given are exploits with no current fixes, but I haven't found this on a Microsoft site.

Anyways, going off-topic nao.

I'll still be getting the Xbox One.

Based on the fact that Microsoft produces and maintains better software. PSN has been hacked numerously in the past, Xbox has had some of its data leaked but nothing as large as a network shutdown. Not only that, the features are just better. I'd rather pay for quality features and get piece of mind that your going to be able to use that anytime and anywhere rather than rely on a free network that has proven to be vulnerable in the past. Of course, none knows at this time whether PSN or Xbox Live will become free or paid services, but looking at what Microsoft had planned for the redistribution of their games, i doubt there will be much change in what is already their paid services. Of course, that's the online part of both consoles and Microsoft hasn't really said any of its plans to change it yet.

I've listened to a couple of rants about this console where people are bitching about it becoming more of a home theater product and sway away from gaming. But if you actually read you would notice they really haven't taken anything away from the overall experience, they certainly haven't said much that makes you think that they have improved on it, but at the moment, looking at what has been said, there's only been improvements and inclusions.

Microsoft obviously listens to peoples opinions about their products, they'll fix this.
Obviously there's going to be many of you that disagree with me because you prefer Sony. Thats your opinion, this is mine.
