How to edit a CMS and add features?

I started to learn how to edit CMS or create CMS, but so far it's rough. So I decided to see what devbest users or staff would say.

PHP, CSS (Maybe?), HTML, ect.

What I mean is, you have to learn the basics before you try going all out on it. You can't say you 'started learning how to edit a cms', and don't even know the anything about what you're coding. It will take time and dedication to get going, it may bore you having to read and understand what it really means, but you have to go throughout the process.
