Do you have all your SWFs setup? Are they pointing up to the correct SWF directory? but I guess that's no the problem since if the SWF is missing it'll connect then disconnect.
On your external_variables, change all %predefined% to 127.0.0.1.
On your config.php (/app/management/), make sure that the ip address there is 127.0.0.1 not localhost.

Right after you visit the client, it attempts to connect on a server where it is pointed. The question is.. are you using an IP address, a web address, or localhost/127.0.0.1?
This tutorial is already outdated due to dramatical changes with Phoenix. Please keep in mind that if it doesn't work then probably you have to try out another tutorial. Thanks for your time.
I had trouble with housekeeping like this before. What I did is I kept the .htaccess in the /ase/ folder then I installed Helicon APE and that fixed the thing. I don't know why it doesn't work for others / it doesn't work now. ~
