Habbo shows off their new Looks Editor:
Wtf, that looks disgusting. Reminds me of their other game. Personally, I'd expect better from a company that can afford to hire good graphic designers, even retro skids can do better than that.

Excuse me???? Why is Habbo switching to Unity LOL????? This is the type of engine a company that isn't as established uses, not an already industry-made company. I use Unity, it's a great engine don't get me wrong, but again, it's Habbo. They can actually afford to hire people to code their stuff from scratch rather than using a free game engine.

A lot of established companies use Unity... Why would you reinvent the real? Most games use a game engine, it would be a waste of time and resources to build something from scratch.

One or two of those Unity games could be considered AAA industry games, I believe you misunderstood the statement. Unreal Engine is not a good comparison to Unity. Unreal Engine, which has made games like Borderlands, Bioshock, Gears of War, and other well-known titles. If you look at the genre of most of those games listed for Unity, none of them would fit an isometric 2D sandbox MMO, hence my statement "They can actually afford to hire people to code their stuff from scratch rather than using a free game engine," why would they use an engine that limits their capability by it being an engine specifically made for 3D projects, over making their own stuff to their specific needs. Not saying Unity can't make 2D projects, but it was meant for 3D, hence the name Unity3D. Also, no one said most games didn't use a game engine, I said that Habbo has no business using such an engine that has limits, not to include Unity would take much longer to create the systems Habbo had rather than just creating them on their own. As an experienced Unity user my statement is, just because it's a known game engine does not mean it'll create everything you want to create, if it does, you'll definitely need to use other extensions with Unity to get it to work properly.

I have a feeling that retros are going to official die. I say that because of how bad the community is ignorant childish users on retros. They make the hotel pretty shit for what they do if the retro community stays like the way it's going then I give retros less than a year. For me I seen a significance amount players drop since the past 2 years. I mean I don't agree with adobe flash player leaving retros, but it's the new decade let's see how it goes I'm ready for this.

I agree. I feel that Retros will die at the end of this year, especially when Flash is removed. Unless, there are browsers with flash still existing - With less users. It is like a comparison to when we needed Hamachi to play retros, and then R63 with flash. If retros will still exist where users have to download a different (unknown) browser, they will not last and usercount will decrease a lot. Nevertheless, we will never know until it happens, I heard people will be working on coding a HTML5 client when Habbo releases Habbo 2020. I am disappointed with the new layout which Habbo is releasing - I know it is mainly aimed at teenagers but seems even more childlike and the layout is more focused around a mobile platform style.

Those are most english hotels.

It's almost like no one is willing to welcome new users anymore they're happy with what they have.

And what they have is a bunch of toxic people roasting each other all day and come back for more tomorrow because it makes them feel better.

Habbo HTML5 has a client almost finished for retros by Bill called Nitro.

If retros die, it's by how toxic they are not lack of tech.

The retro community is already dying so it would not surprise myself if it finishes off. I personally feel that no-one will bother playing the newer version of Habbo, does not look appealing to myself either even though I don't bother playing Habbo overall anymore.

It would be idiotic to suggest "no-one will bother playing the newer version of Habbo" of course they will. Retro's have been dying for a many years with numbers decreasing year after year but there's still many active retro's topping more than 500 users per day.

There's plans put in place for popular hotels to move to an alternative, I'm sure it wont be long until somebody releases an alternative for everybody else to use.

Whether they'll be retro's or not, people will still be around in this community.

I think the new design is horrendous to people who came from the original Habbo days, but they're changing their target market to younger people again to try reviving it. Habbo will end up getting some new users in it hopefully if they market it right and those users will eventually progress to retros.

@Quackster's hotel (optionally) does this, and it seems to be decently active
There will always be the oldschool snobs who will do anything and everything to play an old hotel and relive their youth. It's a very niche crowd and most retros would be dead if they required a browser download to work.

Personally, I don't think it's all that bad so far from what they have shown. It looks interesting, and I'm sure over time they will definitely improve it and take user feedback into consideration (Habbo has already asked their community). I think the main problem is that most people don't like change, even I don't to an extent. However, times change and things become stale.

Looking forward to seeing more updates and what the future of Habbo will bring.

this scene is hilariously confused on just how expensive software is for companies. creating a private in house engine could cost hundreds of thousands in both up front cost and maintenance

A multi-million dollar company can't afford the resources to push out something better than a Unity game? Interesting, I guess money isn't everything. If they have a lot more experience than myself, then why would they use an engine like Unity? Single developers tend to use Unity because it's fit for someone who doesn't have a good income to keep up employees that are experienced in certain fields. You do understand that Sulake isn't a starting up company, right? They're not a brand new company that is just now coming into the scene, they already have a reputation. By Orange Games being the parent company, that immediately grants them exposure to funds they probably never had, so it just confuses me why they'd bother using such engine where there are clearly limitations, yes you can make just about everything, but there are limitations to what they can do because of the Unity terms of service. This has nothing to do with the flexibility to push out something quickly, it has to do getting something that is quality. Limitations can remove certain things that made Habbo what it is. Everyone saw a dramatic drop in activity when casinos were removed from the hotel, more than 40% of the player count left when casinos were not allowed anymore due to the terms of service they had to follow because they decided to put Habbo under a rating of E for everyone for certain platforms, which prohibit gambling. Now imagine another change in the gameplay caused by Unity's terms of service or an extension they're using with Unity? That's another drop spike if it's something major. So like I was saying, if you can afford to get your own stuff and have the ability to not be limited to what you can do, then why not do it.
